Carnival Garden

The carnival garden was a series of family workshops that began in outreach posts across the city (including in the city centre and at the White Rose Shopping Centre) and culminated in the creation of a carnival garden on the Tetley lawn. The carnival garden was formed over the August bank holiday weekend in 2017 by visiting families who took part in a number of activities including creating costumes, decorating large scale birds, building flowers with moving parts, making gorgeous headwear and designing fluttering butterflies with five onsite artists. The workshops linked in with an exhibition '50 Years of Leeds West Indian Carnival,' that celebrated the carnival's golden anniversary as part of a wider programme of events seeking to gain recognition for the carnival as an important part of local history.
